CLAN - Vision, Values and a question

Thank you to everyone who took the time to read through our draft of our Vision and Values - it's really helpful to have people other than us to look through what we do to make sure what we write makes sense.

So this email is to share these with you, but also to ask you a question (there's a button at the bottom).

To help you decide, here is the current version. It's OK for Vision and Values to be a bit vague because it's the job of the community to work out what they mean in practice. They are guides and explanations to what we want to do, and to what we as a community think is important.

Vision - what we want to do

Community - a co-housing project brought together through our shared love of geek culture.

Living for - between 20 to 30 independent dwellings somewhere urban but with shared green space and a shared communal building.

Aging - built to support independent living for as long as practical. No minimum age for members but focuses on the later stages of life.

Nerds - or geeks if you prefer. You don’t have to be a geek to live here but you do need to want to live with them.

Values - how we do things

Co-operative - we will be run by residents for the residents. We will need to do our part to make this work.

Inclusive - we are an inclusive space that values and celebrates difference, and is actively anti-discriminatory.

Affordability - including places to live for those in need, and built to keep running costs low.

Supportive - we will support each other to live our best lives - balancing our private and shared lives while being good neighbours.

Understanding - we know that we are all coming to our shared lives from different vantage points and experiences. We will listen, be honest, open, and accepting of the perspectives of others.

We know you think CLAN is interesting, that's why you've signed up. But are you someone who wants us to succeed but has no intention of moving in, or are you cautiously interested in joining us one day, depending on a hundred different factors, decisions and timings? It would help us know if there's 70 or 7 people on our list who are open to the idea. Please press the button to give us your answer!*

One thing we have decided but isn't in our Vision and Values is our location; we are going to be somewhere along the M1 or M62 corridors, north of Birmingham, east of the Pennines.

Thank you for reading,

Laura

*we will keep this preference with your email address, but we will only share the overall totals outside of CLAN, not anyone's personal preference.

CLAN Cohousing

We are looking to create a co-housing community for aging nerds. We are still in the very early stages, but hope to use this newsletter to keep interested people up to date.

Poster for the event

Hello! I know it's short notice but I have just been alerted to this event which you may be interested in. Leeds Community Homes are one of the organisations we work with, and this will be a good intro into the concept of community-led housing (including co-housing) and an introduction to some of the existing housing projects in Yorkshire. If you want to know more do drop Lucy an email (or send us an email and I'll contact her on your behalf). I hope to be there too. All the best,Laura...

Thanks for bearing with us, folks. Since our last email when we had just discovered the insane cost of building new dwellings post-pandemic, we've had to go back and start researching other options, like modular buildings, pre-existing flats/groups of houses, and converting old buildings into dwellings. These options may not be as perfect as being able to build something to our co-housing dream specifications, but we hope that we can find a solution that still keeps the heart and ideals of...

We hope you had a good Christmas and New Year, so it's time for Gathering II, Spring 2025! We have booked a space at LILAC co-housing in Leeds, the same venue as last time. The format will be broadly similar too: a tour of LILAC, a presentation and Q&A session in their common lounge, followed by games in their common room. As last time, there is a first-come-first served offer of bed space at Mavis'. Food will be decided closer to the time when we know who is coming and dietary needs. First...
